Religious Education

Religious Education at Hugh Christie is delivered partly through an integrated programme of social, moral, spiritual and cultural education, which is mapped across and embedded within the main curriculum. Examples of this include:
  • The exploration of attitudes towards people of varying ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds when discussing migration in Geography and Citizenship Topics in REAL.
  • The study of contrasting cultures and religious beliefs when studying fiction and non-fiction texts in English and in the REAL Curriculum.
  • The values and actions of religious groups during the 1st and 2nd World Wars in History and REAL.
  • Discuss attitudes and beliefs of religions when studying Literature and particular countries e.g. India.
  • Topical discussions built around stimulus materials during Advisory sessions and assemblies, covering controversial issues such as euthanasia, abortion and terrorism.
To supplement this, students in KS3 and KS4 receives a range of immersive and intensive opportunities to explore a range of religions, their values and beliefs during Focus Fortnight. For example:
  • A study of the six principal religions, including a comparison of their beliefs and practises and opportunities for students to relate these to their own lives and values.
  • A detailed study of the holocaust and the victimisation of the Jews and other religious groups, culminating in workshops from the Holocaust Educational Trust and a presentation from a holocaust survivor.
  • Work with local church groups in activities exploring Christian beliefs and how students can relate these to moral dilemmas in their own lives.
  • An opportunity to experience a religious place of worship on an educational visit to one of the following venues: a Buddhist temple, a Hindu temple, a mosque and a cathedral.
  • Experience and explore different religious traditions throughout the calendar year e.g. The Easter story and the Festival of Diwali.
