The Health and Social Care Department is located within the Empower Academy.  It consists of a Health and Social Care classroom with computer access via desktops and laptops.  

Health and Social Care is increasingly popular at Key Stage 5, and is currently one of the fastest growing service sectors in the local area.
 
 

Key stage 5

Pearson Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care

At Key Stage 5 students study the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate qualification, a 2 year course leading to the equivalence of 1 A-level. This qualification is assessed through a mix of externally set exams and internally set assignments. 

This qualification is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels.

Past students have gone on to work in careers such as care support work, nursing, paramedic, social work and the police force.

Course Content and assessment 

Year 12:

Unit 1 - Human Lifespan Development 

Learners cover physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan, and the factors affecting development and the effects of ageing. 

Assessment - Externally set examination

Unit 5 - Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs 

Learners focus on the principles and practicalities that underpin meeting individuals’ care and support needs, which are the foundation of all the care disciplines

Assessment - Internally set assignment

Year 13:
 

Unit 2 - Working in Health and Social Care 

Learners explore what it is like to work in the health and social care sector, including the roles and responsibilities of workers and organisations. 

Assessment - Externally set examination

Unit 10 – Sociological Perspectives 

Learners explore the sociological perspectives of health care provision and the different models of health and illness, including the impact that family, occupation, social class and other aspects of our environment and culture have on our health.

Assessment - Internally set assignment
