Health and Social Care
Mr M Goss – Assistant Director of Sixth Form
The Health and Social Care Department is located within the Empower Academy. It consists of a Health and Social Care classroom with computer access via desktops and laptops.
Health and Social Care is increasingly popular at both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, and is currently one of the fastest growing service sectors in the local area.
Pupils in Year 11 follow the Cambridge Nationals qualification which is equivalent to one GCSE and consists of one exam and 3 coursework assessments.
One of the assignments studied allows students to gain a first aid qualification, which is beneficial for anyone pursuing work experience in the health and social care sector and perhaps a career later on.
The course links well to the Level 3 Cambridge Technicals which can be studied at Key Stage 5 and provides students with a broad range of health knowledge and practical care skills.
At Key Stage 5 students study the Cambridge Technicals qualification, a 2 year course leading to the equivalence of 1 A-level. This qualification has no exams and is purely assessed through set assignments. There are a wide range of units to choose from specialising in either health, social or early years care.
At both levels the course is designed to be as practical as possible in order to fully prepare students who may wish to pursue a career in one of the many caring environments. Past students have progressed onto university courses in teaching, nursing and psychology; others have chosen to study further at college level in early years care and public services.
